Does the cruise control only work above a certain speed?

Hi, I have tried using my crusie control for the first time, as I have not long had the car( S40 1.8i 98yr)and never used CC before, I was only trying it on a straight road at about 40mph. It didnt seem to do anything when I turned it on and I held the + sign on the stalk. Do you have to be at a certain speed and should there be a light come on to say its working?. Thanks in advance. Dave

I haven't seen a light in both my X40's? CC will not work below a speed of 22mph. Set the switch on the stalk to "ON". Be sure your not resting your foot on the clutch pedal (a bad habit a few of us have :o) as pressing both the clutch or brake pedal deactivates the CC. To turn off CC just tap the clutch or brake pedal or turn it off with the switch on the stalk. If when your driving along the motorway and you need to slow down a bit just tap the clutch/brake and it will disengage. Then when your way is clear just slide the button to "RESUME" and it will automatically return to the speed you were previously doing. I can't live without it :)

without going to the car park and switching mine on, I have a small light that looks like a speedo. This comes up green when the cruise is on it's in the instrument cluster to the left hand side

Thanks for the info gents, I dont get a light come on and when switching it on, it doesnt appear to work. Could anyone tell me if there is a fuse to check(check the easy bit first!!) or is it going to be something more complicated.

@ DavidMarron... Is yours a phase II model as there is no mention of it in the phase I...? @ Lucas1787... check fuse 11 under the bonnet. It controls the ignition switch (starter motor relay, lighting and cruise control) so I doubt it's the problem. You'll have to check the CC pump which is located on the bulkhead behind the NS strut. Look for broken vacuum pipes or the connector isn't disconnected. You can also check the micro switches mounted to the pedals.

i got a 2001 v40 1.8i and my cc does not work below 50mph and thats what it says in the hand book seems abit silly if you want to use cc at 30mph on roads when all you will be doing is accelerating and braking which inturn will knock the cc off dont even rest your foot on the pedals as they are dead sensitive and will knock it off drive over 50mph take your foot off the clutch and press the + button till you feel the car accelerate even though you are not pressing pedal any further then lift foot off pedal press + button if you want to go faster weeeeeeeeee!

yes - phase 2. 2001 1.8iSE the cruise works as above - never tried cruise on anything less than a motorway though - or I suppose some stretch of A road that's motorway like

cruise control should work if your speeds over 22mph when you have it switched on and the green lights on ,have you pressed the rocker switch on the end of the stalk ? in an upwards press the pedal will feel as if its going from under your foot
