The Best Firewire Drive... again.

MessageAuthor

Ok, so other than the Lacie and EZ-Quest approach, what is the best Firewire drive? Or, what are people actually using? The Quantegy drives are great, but too expensive. Suggestions?

I've had great results with OWC's drives, they've always been on the cutting edge. (Other World Computers)

I Second That!!! I've been running OWC drives with the 8mb cache for almost a year now. I came from Ultra SCSI and was a little concerned about reaction time with high track counts and dense edits, but they work great! I've never had any problem whatsoever...

Ok. Well does anyone have a preference for building their own? What are your favorite enclosures? What are your favorite drives (as the market currently permits)? Oxford 922 yet? Stay with 911? thanks everybody, ahead of time.

I've had nothing but fantastic performance with Western Digital JB series drives in Granite Digital cases. Granite Digital cables are also outstanding. I also appreciate the fact that Granite Digital keeps their firmware flashers up-to-date (and they're easy to download). Whenever possible, I much prefer cases with fans and power supplies with grounded, EIAJ cords rather than wall warts or line lumps. I'm funny that way. YMMV. Lee Blaske

RE: The Best Firewire Drive... again.

Been cruising along with Rocstor drives, both 400 and 800 models, for about a year now. I've only had one bump so far, and that was with someone else's system: An HD rig with Panther 10.3.2 on a MDD G4 wouldn't mount my FW 400 drive. It also had SCSI and three other FW devices, but that shouldn't have mattered. Didn't really have time to troubleshoot it. Brought it back to my studio (running 10.2.8) and it mounted just fine. It was just for backup purposes (I had two hot-swap SCSI drives for recording) so I worked around it, but it was still a little disturbing. Anyone else have this issue?
