Drum recording tips?

Hi all I am planning on laying down some bed tracks this Friday at my buddys place (live drums), and am looking for any tips you may be able to offer I will be using 1xD112, some 57's & 58's and some old aphex mics for the symbols. I have a mackie 24x4 and will run my snake (24x4) from the upstairs to the downstairs (to the drums)and am somewhow going to run my POD through the board down to some headphones so I can play along with him, I was thinking of running the Kick and Snare direct into the 001 (front inputs) and use the sends on my mackie into the back of the 001 for the rest of the kit(is it ok to use regular 1/4" cables for this I only have a couple balanced 1/4"'s) Thanks in advance 18Duffs

I would recommend placing the cymbol mics at least 3 to 4 feet above the cymbols. This will help them to pick up less of the kit and let the sound from the cymbols develope more. I do, however, place a mic on the hats, just incase you need more of them in relation to the other cymbols. As for other mic placements, make sure the mics are close to the drum heads, and pointed in the right place. You mainly just have to really take time to adjust the mic placements to make sure you're getting the best sound and that rejection of the rest of the kit is reasonable.

make sure to have alot of time to tune, if you not used to the way they might sound in a different room. if you are in a familiar room just tune them up good. agree with mic placements.
