V40 Headlamp headlight intermittant problem

Hi all, My volvo v40 has just failed it's MOT! I'm sure you will all be relieved that there isn't anything major. However, it failed on the near side main beam being intermittant. (i have twin headlamps, v40 2.0 my2000). It worked last night but this morning not. As anyone else had this sort of problem? I checked the connector and it's OK. I get a reading of 11.7V but just no light up (only when it wants too!) Does anyone know how the lights are controlled. Is there a relay or is it the ecu? Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Otherwise I'll have to take it to the main stealer....ouch!! Many thanks, Confused.

Thanks for the reply. The bulb is fine. I tried 2 seperate bulbs. One is brand spankers. Im thinking the volts are there but the bulb cannot drawn enough current. Maybe I need 1.21 Gigawatts to run the flux capacitor!.....sorry.

Bad earth on that side perchance? Try rigging a temp earth and see what happens

The garage that MOT'd it can find the fault. They suggested going to the dealer. I just wondered if anyone else has experienced a similar problem. Is there some kind of fancy control unit that controls the lights?
