OT... Cleaning Vinyl

MessageAuthor

A friend of mine recently came across some old vinyl LPs. They're in relatively good shape but could do with a cleaning. I'm not the least bit familiar with vinyl, but wondered what everyones recommendations would be for the cleaning and care of these records. any suggestions are welcome

record cleaners are the best. i don't know if anybody sells them new anymore. i find 'em at thrift stores and yard sales. might find some on ebay. its a worthy investment(shouldn't cost more than 5-10 bucks max(or .50 at the thrift)). all that aside, i've seen everything from windex to endust to plain ol' rubbing alcohol used in record shops. just get some paper towels and rub AROUND in a circle(not strait toward the edge). hope this helps. ps. store records on their side, not flat. enjoy. long live vinyl!!!!

I use a Discwasher kit. They still sell them new everywhere for $20. If you don't want to do that then use a soft, lint-free cloth (Scotch Brite's High Performance Cloths are perfect and are sold at grocery stores, etc.) and distilled water. Though this does not have anti-static properties it will make do...
