Midi Editor Duplicate question

Duplicating patterns of notes one bar or under is pretty easy with control-c and then control-shift-v at the new location and then repeating. (paste with original note positions in bar). But is there a method where a pattern that would be over one bar in length, and not necessarily repeating on each bar, could be duplicated? It's probably staring me right in the face but nothing I've tried seems to work. One example would be a single note in 4/4 on the 4-and beat which occurs every second bar. But anything larger than one bar which isn't consistent within each bar would be a candidate. --Bill

You should get the repeating pattern and then copy. For example, in the example you mentioned, you would copy first 4 bars and then paste with preserved positions in the measure.

Ok... So, is this a bug or am I missing something? Other suggestions for duplicating an arbitrary block of notes x times? --Bill

Would you mind posting a small Reaper project (the .RPP file) containing a MIDI item with the notes you want to duplicate, so we can get on the same page?

Sure, one is attached now. This is a midi track with an 1/8 note grid and 1/16 notes (I switch around some). Here's some steps for bug #1: 1. Go to note E3 and select the two notes in bar 6 and 7. 2. Copy them, move tape head to bar 8/1 and paste with control-shift-V (paste in bar position) twice. Everything looks fine. 3. Now go to note E2 and select the two notes in bar 5 and 7. 4. Copy them, move tape head to bar 9/1 and paste as above, twice. Note that the first paste is correct, the second one is not. 5. Now, clear those pastes and go back to E2 bar 5 and 7 changing them to 1/8 notes and repeat step four. Now both pastes are correct. Bug#2 Note that the current midi range extends only to bar 24. Repeat-paste any of the patterns enough to go past bar 24 and note what happens. I don't believe it should do that, but either stop or extend the region. What brought me to all of this was the need to seamlessly select an area of notes of an arbitrary length (1-2-3-4 bars or whatever) and be able to duplicate the contents forward in an increment size equal to the selection (presumably in accordance with snap rules). But there doesn't seem to be a way in Reaper midi that a selection length is significant, only the notes themselves. --Bill

OK, thanks for the detail! Reaper doesn't yet have a way to make a time selection around a note (or item) selection and say, paste all of this including the empty space. In the arrange view, you can create a region and copy it, which accomplishes the same thing with more work, but you can't do this in the MIDI editor. In your case, you want to paste a 4-bar region that has notes only in bars 1 and 3. "Paste preserving position in measure" works fine, but the edit cursor ends up at the end of the 3rd measure, since that's all that was pasted. To copy this section repeatedly, you will need to advance the edit cursor one measure, then run the action again. (We'll add actions to move the MIDI edit cursor by measures, which will make this a little easier.) BTW, elevated FR for what you want is here:
